2008 WSOP Event #54: $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em World Championship

Only in his fantasies did 22 year-old Peter Eastgate think his first poker tournament on American soil would result in becoming World Champion. But fantasy became reality for the young Danish player when he triumphed over Russian Ivan Demidov to win the 2008 WSOP Main Event. The $9.25 million first-place payday was enough to catapult Eastgate into top spot on Denmark's all-time money list. Gus Hansen now sits in second with $7.3 million.
The four month pause before the final table was a satisfying one for Demidov. He finished 3rd in the WSOP Europe Main Event. Thanks to his $5.8 million payday, he now has more than double the career winnings of any Russian poker player.
American Dennis Phillips came into the final table as the chip leader. After narrowly dodging a disastrous ninth place finish, Phillips fought back to finish third for $4.5 million.
The rest of the final table participants finished as such:
4th: Ylon Schwartz - U.S.A. - $3.8M
5th: Scott Montgomery - Canada - $3.1M
6th: Darus Suharto - Canada - $2.4M
7th: David "Chino" Rheem - U.S.A. - $1.7M
8th: Kelly Kim - U.S.A. - $1.3M
9th: Craig Marquis - U.S.A. - $900,000
With his win, Eastgate is now the youngest person ever to win the Main Event. This title was held for nearly twenty years by Phil Hellmuth who became World Champion at the age of 24.
